The city of Eagle River is located on the Eagle River, just north of Anchorage, between the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and the Chugach State Park. Best known as the host of the annual five-day Bear Paw Festival, Eagle River also serves as a regional hub for shopping, dining, and recreation.
Shopping and Dining
Eagle River is home to numerous stores, shops, restaurants, and service providers. Old Glenn Highway, one of the city’s main shopping districts, is lined with gift stores, eateries, shops, and more. Oopsie Daisy sells unique gifts, artfully arranged floral bouquets, and plush animals. Offering exclusive coffee blends, regular live music, and a cozy atmosphere, Jitters is the perfect place to unwind on the weekend. Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant is known as much for its superb service as for its authentic Mexican cuisine. Piccolino's Restaurant serves Greek and Italian fare and the Eagle River Ale House offers a large menu and a wide variety of craft beers. Additional popular coffeehouses in the area include Tinkers Rainforest Deli and Sleepy Dog. Area grocers include Walmart, Fred Meyer, and Carrs Safeway.
Parks and Recreation
Nestled at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, Eagle River real estate offers convenient access to the region’s best outdoor activities. Rafters, kayakers, and other whitewater enthusiasts can enjoy the sparkling waters of Eagle River. Hikers, campers, skiers, climbers, and snowmobilers revel in the half-million acres of the country’s third largest state park. Bicyclists enjoy traversing the terrain between Eagle River and Anchorage on the city’s bike trail, which runs along the New Glenn Highway. Residents also can play or take in a game at the Russell Oberg Soccer Complex or play a round on Schroeder Park’s 9-hole disc golf course.
The Eagle River Nature Center, located at the entrance to the Chugach State Park, offers interpretive education, resource protection, and various outdoor hiking opportunities. From the center, visitors can hike the historic Crow Pass Trail to the nearby town of Girdwood or access the Rodak Nature and Albert Loop Trails, two of the park’s most popular trails. The Harry J. McDonald Memorial Center on Harry McDonald Rd. features a two-lane walking and jogging track, a new multi-use turf field, two community meeting rooms, and an Olympic-sized skating rink. Hockey is a big part of life in Eagle River. The Mustang Hockey Association facilitates youth hockey for both boys and girls with teams such as the Mustangs, Blue Devils and Lady Mustangs. The Eagle River area is also home to more than two dozen parks, a soccer club, a Nordic ski club, and an archery club.

Eagle River real estate offers all of the amenities and economic opportunities of Anchorage combined with the friendliness and safety of a more suburban environment. Due to the city’s popularity and rapid growth, house prices are on par with Anchorage. Lots, however, are larger than in the big city, and the houses are typically newer. Schools, Health, and Transportation
The Anchorage School District operates 10 top-quality public schools in and around Eagle River, including Eagle River Elementary, Eagle Academy Charter School, Gruening Middle School, and Eagle River High School. High school students also have the option of attending Chugiak High School, which is located approximately two miles northeast of town. There also are several private schools in town, including Eagle River Christian Academy and St. John’s Community School.
Alaska Regional Hospital, Providence Hospital in Anchorage, and Alaska Native Medical Center provide emergency and acute-care services for the Eagle River community. The closest is approximately 20 minutes from the city’s center. Routine medical care services, including diagnostic imaging, women’s health, orthopedics, and physical therapy, are available in town at the 20,000-sq.-ft. Drivers can take the New Glenn Highway from Eagle River into Anchorage. Commute times are approximately 15 to 30 minutes, sometimes longer in the winter. Residents who prefer not to drive can travel into downtown Anchorage via the People Mover bus system. Bus service also is available from Eagle River to the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
