Lake Clark real estate is available for adventurous people who want to live in remote Alaska, America's last frontier. This is the place for people who want spectacular scenery, clean air and sparkling turquoise water.

Lake Clark is a 42-mile long lake located approximately 100 miles southwest of Anchorage. The nearest town is Port Alsworth on Hardenburg Bay with a small full time population of 150. 

The area is the Lake Clark National Park and Preserve with hiking trails, wild rivers and great fishing. The abundance of sockeye salmon brings anglers to the park each summer. River rafters and boaters enjoy the lake and rivers as the days grow longer. 

This is the land where the Alaska range meets the Chigmit Mountains. You can see snow-covered volcanoes Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Iliamma looming in the distance from your waterfront acreage. You may share your Lake Clark real estate with brown and black bear, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves.

Shopping and Dining

Although this is the rugged back country of Alaska, visitors enjoy comfortable lodges offering good food and clean rooms. The lodges, including Farm Lodge, Back Country Inn and River Wild Lodge, have dining rooms for guests. Dining is informal family style.

This is Alaska and many residents fly their own float planes to Anchorage where they stock up on supplies at Costco and other stores. Port Alsworth also has a small airport with a dirt and gravel runway. Several Anchorage stores deliver to this community by air. Shopping online is also important for people living in this ruggedly beautiful but remote region.

Parks and Recreation

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve offers recreation that includes fishing, boating, river rafting and enjoying the beauty of the magnificent back country. Fresh water streams and the lake provide abundant cold water fish including grayling, trout, pike dolly varden and salmon. 

Proenneke's Cabin in the park is an example of what is possible in the wilderness. Richard Proenneke built his log cabin in 1967-68 using only hand tools. The cabin is now a National Register Historic Site in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.

The Telaquana Trail used by intrepid backpackers in the park was blazed by the Dena'ina natives a century ago. Park visitors can learn the history of the trail and the culture of the indigenous people. Helicopter and float plane tours of the park area are also available.

The park is home to the Chilkadrotna, Tlikakila and Mulchatna wild rivers. Rafters and canoe paddlers enjoy these scenic rivers in the late spring and summer.

Living

Lake Clark real estate includes Port Alsworth, zip code 99653, in the Lake and Peninsula Borough. Port Alsworth and neighboring Nondalton and Iliamma villages all have US post offices. Port Alsworth also has a public school, telephone service and central power.  Keyes Point offers many cabins and home sites; Keyes Point is on the western side of Lake Clark approximately 8 miles south of Port Alsworth.

The days are long April through August with 16 to 18 hours of daylight. December sees daylight for only five hours.

Employment is limited to aircraft maintenance and the hospitality industry. National Park Ranger Stations are located in Port Alsworth and Nondalton. People in these towns communicate daily with neighbors in the villages of Kohanok and Iliamma, approximately five to seven miles away.

People interested in living in Alaska's back country might enjoy reading novels by Dana Stabenow, Sherry Simpson and other Alaskan writers familiar with rural areas. Several of Stabenow's mysteries feature an area called "the park" based on rural communities similar to those found in the Lake Clark area.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Children in Port Alsworth attend the Tanalian school, part of the Lake and Peninsula School District. The school covers K-12 with a total enrollment of 40-45 students. Other schools are located in Nondalton and Kohanok. Post secondary education in the region is available in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Hospitals in Anchorage and Dillingham serve the 34 villages in the Lake and Peninsula Borough. Lake Clark is an isolated area and people must depend on each other for health care. LifeMed Alaska provides necessary medical evacuation services for rural areas of the state including the Lake Clark region.

Lake Clark communities are reached boat or by air, including float planes. Lake Clark Air provides transportation and flight seeing tours. Residents typically drive all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.
